Michigan's Upper Peninsula
Rustic lodging where the forest meets the sky, far from the rush of modern life. No frills, just peace — the way the outdoors was meant to be experienced.
Our Story
The Boondocker's Bunkhouse isn't a retreat designed to impress. It's a place that simply is — a stretch of Michigan woods where the trees grow tall, the nights go dark, and the only agenda is to slow down and breathe.
Located where County Roads 415 and 455 converge, just outside McMillan in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, we offer a straightforward kind of hospitality: clean beds, a reliable roof, and easy access to trails, waterways, and the kind of solitude that's hard to find these days.
Whether you're passing through on a road trip, returning to the woods for a weekend of fishing, or simply looking for a place where the phone signal dies and the quiet takes over — this is it.
Accommodations
From tent sites beneath the canopy to cozy bunkhouse rooms, we keep it simple so you can focus on the experience.
Shared and private bunk-style rooms with clean bedding, heating, and a communal space to gather. Built for groups, families, or solo travelers who don't mind a little camaraderie.
Bring your own tent or RV and settle into a shaded spot among the pines. Flat ground, easy access, and the kind of dark sky you won't find anywhere else.
For those who want a step more privacy without leaving the woods. A small, no-fuss cabin with the essentials — a bed, a table, and a view that doesn't need filtering.
What's Around
McMillan sits in one of the most untouched stretches of Michigan wilderness. Once you park your bags at the bunkhouse, the real itinerary writes itself.
Miles of unmaintained and lightly maintained trails wind through hemlock, fir, and white pine. Some lead to waterfalls. Most lead nowhere at all — and that's the point.
The McMillan Creek and nearby lakes offer trout, perch, and the kind of still water that reflects the sky so clearly you forget you're on land.
Summer trails, fall color, winter snowshoeing, spring thaw — the woods shift with every season and each one feels like a different place entirely.
With no streetlights for miles, the Milky Way is visible most nights. Bring a blanket. Stay up late. The silence makes it feel like you're floating.

— A guest from Traverse CityWe drove past a dozen campgrounds looking for somewhere that felt real — not curated, not Instagrammed, just there. The Bunkhouse was exactly that. Woke up to birds, coffee on the porch, and no one around for miles.
